Mental Health Issues in People of Ethiopian Descent - Friday, March 21, 2008 the Center for Multicultural Human Services (CMHS) will be offering a continuing education workshop. The workshop, the details of which follow, will be held at 14150 Parkeast Circle, Suite 240, Chantilly, VA 20151 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Doors will open at 9:00 a.m. Registration for this workshop is available online at http://www.cmhs.org/programs/W117.html. Presenter: Yeshashwork Kibour, Ph.D., LCP. This workshop is designed to familiarize practitioners with the multitude of issues that impact the mental health of Ethiopian immigrants. These issues include but are not limited to, migration trends, political unrest, religion, culture, stigma, cultural adjustment, and the impact of migration on the family system. The workshop will discuss culturally rooted practices to teach values and norms, as well as existing methods of coping utilized by Ethiopians in the Diaspora. This workshop is appropriate for psychologists, professional counselors, and social workers. Fees: $50.00 (for those seeking continuing education credits) / $40.00 (for those not seeking continuing education credits). Foundations on the Hill (Event Brings Together Foundation Representatives and Congress) - An annual event jointly hosted by the Council on Foundations and the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers, is designed to inform members of Congress about the important role foundations play in improving communities across the country and around the world. Foundation trustees and staff work with their regional associations to schedule meetings on Capital Hill to personally discuss their work with members of Congress. This event effectively combines the Council's expertise on legal and legislative matters with the regional associations' knowledge of local philanthropy and the leverage they bring as local constituents. The 22nd Annual Training Conference on the Management and Treatment of Sex Offenders presented by The Virginia Sex Offender Treatment Association, March 5 - 7, 2008, Charlottesville, VA
Fee: $120 Registration ($100 before Feb 21) covers tuition only
The 22nd Annual VSOTA Training Conference will focus on interventions with sex offenders in order to enhance public safety. Research suggests that quality treatment programs will ultimately lead to a reduction in sexual victimization. This conference is aimed at helping service providers improve their skills in working with this difficult population.
